LIGHT x LP
Designed and realized with Alvar Silvennoinen

Inspired by disassembling lamps and focusing on the basic principles of light and reflectors we created a sculptural lamp that defines a space with luminance and ambiance. The focus was on the interior of pendant lamps, observing how they are composed of simple mechanical parts that direct light through reflectors. The lampshade acts as a framework to hold everything together. Inspired by this, the project aimed to create a sculptural lamp that embodies simplicity and uses light to define focal points.

Through interactive reflecting elements, the light can be directed in different directions and manipulated in size, brightness, and sharpness to create various atmospheres for different activities and moods. The reflector can be switched for different light shapes and qualities to fit the highlighted area. A sculptural piece that fits harmoniously in the space, modern or classic, with or without light.

The silhouette of the disassembled lamps also influenced the stand’s shape, resembling a light-holding outline. 3D models were created to experiment with different heights and bends, which were then built in 1:5 and 1:1 scales. To understand reflections, lights sources and diffusers and how they affect how the light plays 1:5 light explorations were made with different light sources, reflectors, diffusors, shapes and distances. 1:1 light explorations with reflectors, diffusors, shapes and distances to examine and explore how the light is spread and reflected depending on distance from mirror to reflector in different shapes and sizes.
